I understand that registration is a complex thing to do, it I would like to do it myself if possible. My late husband and I purchased our home in 1978, I have deeds and all paperwork back to when the land was first sold to a builder who went on to build a fairly large estate. Whilst I think that registration is not compulsory I understand that if registered it makes it easier for my executors to sell or carry out my wishes when I die. I have read that a plan of the land is required, is that something I could do by measuring and drawing to scale? Please help! Thank you

Yvonne - it is something you can do yourself but we would always recommend using a conveyancer as they are aware of the forms, process and what deeds/documents are needed.
Your application would be a voluntary one and Land registration is complex, designed to protect legal and financial interests in property. There can be significant consequences for any error. Please do consider seeking legal representation.
Our PG1 explains how such an application should me made - the guide explains how you would define the land/property to be registered
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/first-registrations/practice-guide-1-first-registrations
