I thought the Council owned the land near my house but they don't and they told them to contact HMLR
This often happens as people are concerned as their street lights have failed or there's fly-tipping at the back of their road or people are parking on land and you don't think they should be allowed to or they are unsure if the road is public or private

If you go to the council to see if they own land or know who does they will invariably tell you to contact us, HM Land Registry
In doing so they are often confirming that they don't own the land
When they tell you to contact us they don't mean that we will simply tell you. They mean that you can search online/by post to check and confirm if the land is registered and if so to whom
Search for land and property information - GOV.UK
The online and postal services are open to All
