I want to find a register for a property that I know was occupied by a relative from 1994-2002ish. The problem I have is that the historic register/title plan searches available need specific dates for the title. Is there a systematic way of discovering these dates? It's not 100% clear to me what the date in the form represents. I know I will get a copy of the register if I pick the exact date the property changed hands, but if I choose any other day, am I likely to get nothing in return for my money when I fill out a request form? And if so, is there some way I can apply for the current register, then work my way back progressively to get to the register I'm interested in?

Benjamin - we ask customers to contact us first to identify the correct edition date(s) as appropriate
What's the title number involved and what are you specifically trying to confirm please?
Note - occupying a property does not mean owning it so if someone lived there, but they were not the legal owner, then that would not be on record with us

Hi Adam. Thanks for the reply.

The title number on the current title register is HP681889. I'm trying to confirm who owned the property at or before 2002. The relative who may or may not have owned the property passed away around this time. I expect there would have been a transfer around 2002 or 2003 if he did own it.

Benjamin - many thanks. That title/property was first registered in 2006 so we don't have an earlier edition re the years you are searching for
The original deeds/documents would have been returned to the conveyancer acting for that first registered owner. so one option is to contact the current owner to see if they now have those deeds/documents. Probable that they won't as it's not routine to hand them over when a property is sold.
Or you can apply by post for a copy of the list of documents submitted at the time of first registration in 2006. That's a form DL submitted with FR on 22 Dec 2006 - Get information about property and land: Get a copy of the deeds - GOV.UK
The list should include details of the older deeds/documents inc dates and parties involved and therefore cover at least 15 years prior to 2006 albeit in minimal detail

Adam, your help has been invaluable. The page you linked has a link to a manual request form:
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/64e852c3db1c07000d22b403/OC2__2023-08-29_.pdf

I assume when you say submitted with FR, you mean I should put "first registration" as the nature of the document under "Documents which are not referred to in the register". Is that correct?

Benjamin - put "form DL/list of docs submitted at time of FR on 22 Dec 2006" as the OC you require
We should have a copy in the paper files but if not we will advise and refund the fee
If that happens next step would be for you to contact the current owner to see if they have anything handed to them by the previous owner/seller
