My Partner has sole ownership of our property. We got married back in August and we are looking at transferring Equity to a shared ownership. Can this be done directly with Land Registry or do we need to instruct a conveyancer on our behalf? Thanks

Geoff - if you mean transfer from a sole name to your joint names then you can do this - Registering land or property with HM Land Registry: Change the registered owner name - GOV.UK
However if the property is mortgaged then your lender is likely to need to consent and also require you to use a conveyancer.

Yes, sorry should have been clearer, from sole name to joint. The property is mortgage free so it looks like I'll have a clear run at this. Thank you Adam for the information and I'll get this filled in and submitted. Looks like I need levels of ID and proof of name change too. not an easy application but not impossible. Thank you

Geoff - shared ownership and equity are terms that take you into a whole world of complexity so am relieved they are not specifically involved here.
Not impossible but I would suggest starting with the TR1 and then AP1 and sort ID after that. Plenty of helpful guidance online as well. And as you say once all done submit along with a certified copy of the marriage certiciate

It's going to be the hmrc calculated certificate forms that are harder to do. We'll be exempt, but we have to go through the process anyway to satisfy LR requirements.

Getting the right form from Hmrc is probably going to be hardest part! But also I have no idea what to answer some of the questions and even the guidance is a bit vague. I might, for the convenience, pay a conveyancer to do it. They've done it a million times before and get it right first time instead of me having a few goes at it.
