I would like to add my spouse to the deed of a property we own.  Neither of us have a passport, so does that mean we can't do the application ourselves and will need to use a conveyancer.

Wendy - our online guidance explains how a sole owner can transfer the whole of the title to themselves and a second person - Registering land or property with HM Land Registry: Change the registered owner name - GOV.UK
Our PG 67 explains how to have your identities verified. Form ID3 can only be used if you have a valid passport so if you don't then form ID1/conveyancer is your only option

Thank you Adam, that is very helpful.  How long does it usually take for such a transfer to be completed as we are thinking of selling the property soon afterwards?

Wendy - wait times can be around on average 4 months. There's nothing to stop you selling whilst the application is pending and if you find a confirmed buyer then a request to expedite it can keep the remaining wait time to a minimum

Thanks again Adam.  Is it any quicker for the electronic input rather than the postal form once you receive the request?

Wendy - if you mean is an e-application dealt with more quickly than a postal one then the answer is possibly. So much depends on the nature of the application and what's then involved in processing the submitted documentation
It shouldn't really matter though as IF an urgency arises expedition should always be requested. However if there is no urgency then how long it takes is largely irrelevant for the owner as it's all about protecting their ownership by submitting the actual application. How long it then waits before being completed is largely irrelevant for them if no urgency exists.
